Baby Melon's Big Day
📖 3 minutes · A story by Yaniv Hamudot
It was picnic day in Fruitville, and everyone was busy, busy, busy.
Banana-Man carried the big blanket. Little Cherry carried a basket of sandwiches. Pip carried the napkins — all twelve of them, stacked up high like a tower.
Baby Melon carried… one grape.
"I am too small," Baby Melon sighed. "Everyone else does big things. I only do tiny things."
Banana-Man knelt down in the grass. "Small friends do important things too," he said. "Just wait and see."
The picnic began. There were tall sandwiches and short sandwiches, and lemonade that tickled your nose when you drank it. Little Cherry sang the picnic song, and Pip's napkin tower fell over only four times, which was a new record.
There were sandwiches and songs and a very silly dance. Then — uh oh! — a blueberry rolled off the table, under the bench, and into a teeny-tiny hole in the fence.
"My blueberry!" said Pip. "That was the best one!"
Banana-Man tried to reach it. His arm was too big. Little Cherry tried. Her arm was too big too. Even Pip tried, but the hole was too small for his leaf hat.
Everyone looked at Baby Melon.
Baby Melon took a deep breath. "I can try," she said.
She rolled this way. She wiggled that way. She squished through the teeny-tiny hole… and popped out the other side, holding the blueberry high!
"HOORAY!" cheered everyone. "Baby Melon did it!"
Pip took the blueberry and smiled the biggest smile. "You saved my snack!"
Baby Melon giggled. Her round cheeks turned extra pink. "Maybe small is not so bad," she said.
"Small is a superpower," said Banana-Man, "when you use it to help a friend."
On the walk home, Baby Melon helped carry the blanket, too. She held one whole corner, all by herself, and she did not drop it even once. It was exactly her size of big job.
And Baby Melon carried the blueberry back to the picnic all by herself — a tiny friend, doing a very big job.
The End. 🍈
